Rio Grand’s Big Meet-and-Greet

Rio Grand meeting Pat in the pasture

Hold onto your hats, folks—Rio Grand, our spunky little foal, is stirring up a commotion at Texas Border Tours! Born just two weeks ago on May 2, 2025, this pint-sized adventurer has the whole herd buzzing, especially Pat and Ghost, who can’t get enough of the new kid in town. This week, Rio’s been sprinting, nibbling, and even braving his first thunderstorm. Grab a seat and hear all about his latest escapades!

A few days ago, we took the gang out to a pasture bursting with tall, luscious green grass. Since the property isn’t fenced, we used ground stakes to keep everyone in place. Well, Pat, our curious mare, wasn’t about to let a stake stop her from meeting Rio Grand up close! With a mighty tug, she yanked that stake right out of the ground and sprinted toward Rio, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Mama Indy neighed up a storm, unsure about Pat’s enthusiasm, but Pat just had to see the baby. When she finally got close, Pat sniffed Rio, and Rio flashed his gummy smile, as if to say, “I’m just a baby, Pat!” That was all Pat needed—she gave a satisfied nod and trotted back, her mission complete.

Rio’s also getting plenty of love from Robert, our founder. Every afternoon, we make sure Rio gets used to being handled. Robert gently touches his nose, rubs his face, and lets Rio nibble on his fingers and arm—turns out, Rio’s a big fan of gum-rubbing! That little foal chomps away, his tiny teeth tickling Robert’s hand, and he’s loving every second of the attention. Rio’s round belly is filling out nicely, proof he’s thriving on Mama Indy’s milk and all that South Texas sunshine.

Speaking of weather, Rio faced his first rainstorm this week, and let’s just say the thunder gave him a bit of a fright! His big eyes widened at the booming sky, but Indy, ever the calm mama, snuggled close and reassured him that all was well. By the end, Rio was prancing through the drizzle like a champ. And those legs? Oh, they’re getting strong! Rio sprints everywhere now, his little hooves a blur as he races across the pasture.

Meanwhile, Ghost is practically pacing a trench in the evenings, dying to get a closer look at Rio when they come in from grazing. That shy mare’s curiosity is in overdrive, and we’re betting she’ll make her move to meet Rio soon. With Pat’s meet-and-greet checked off and Ghost itching for her turn, Rio Grand’s turning into the star of the herd! Come back next week to see if Ghost gets her moment with the foal, or if Rio pulls off another speedy escape. Visit Texas Border Tours to catch this lively little guy in action!

Rio Grand in the Backyard

Well, folks, our little Rio Grand, Indy’s wobbly-legged foal, is already making a name for himself at Texas Border Tours—and not just because he’s cute as a button! Born on May 2, 2025, in the same pasture as our Jersey cow, Karen, Rio’s first week has been a wild ride full of naps, nibbles, and some sneaky escapes that have us all chuckling.

Picture this: Karen, our big-hearted cow, took one look at Rio Grand and decided she was his new mama. She moo-ved right in, ready to babysit, but Indy wasn’t having it! To keep the peace, we brought Indy and Rio to the Texas Border Tours backyard, where Rio found his favorite spot: a cozy pile of hay from an old round bale the horses left behind. That little foal curls up there like it’s a five-star bed, snoozing away between his milk breaks from Mama Indy.

But here’s where the fun begins! On Sunday morning, Indy and Rio decided the backyard was too boring. With a twinkle in their eyes, they slipped through an open gate and trotted next door, munching on the neighbor’s grass like they owned the place. We herded them back, but that afternoon, when the gate was open for just a split second, whoosh! Out they went again, Rio’s tiny legs zooming like he’s training for the foal Olympics. Indy’s teaching her boy to be quick, that’s for sure!

Now, Rio Grand is getting faster by the day. When Robert, our founder, tries to sneak in for a hug, Rio’s like, “Nope, nope, not today!” and darts off, his little tail swishing. It’s a game of tag, and Rio’s winning! We’re keeping a sharp eye on these two escape artists now, making sure the gates stay closed. Rio’s already showing he’s got the spirit of the Rio Grande River—bold, free, and just a bit mischievous.

Come back next week to hear more about Rio Grand’s adventures. Will he outsmart Robert again? Will Karen try to steal him back? Stay tuned, and come visit Texas Border Tours to see this speedy little foal in action!

Welcome to the World, Rio Grand!

Rio Grand the Foal

We’re overjoyed to share that Indy, our beloved paint mare, welcomed her new foal, Rio Grand, into the world on May 2, 2025, at around 5 AM. Born under the soft South Texas dawn, Rio Grand was a sight to behold—his tiny legs wobbling as he took his first steps just hours after birth. By mid-morning, he was already nursing from mama Indy, showing the strength and spirit we know he’ll carry forward.

Rio Grand’s name is inspired by the mighty Rio Grande River that defines our borderlands, a nod to the strength and beauty of this region. Indy has been a doting mother, keeping a watchful eye on her little one as he explores his surroundings. Our team is thrilled to watch Rio Grand grow, and we’ll be sharing weekly updates right here on his milestones, personality, and adventures with the herd.

Check back every week for the latest on Rio Grand, and come visit us at Texas Border Tours to meet him in person when he’s ready to greet our guests!
