A Story about a Horse Named Poke

My name is Poke, and let me tell you—I’ve got a spirit for fun and a belly that’s never too full for another treat! They say I used to be a barrel racer, and I guess I still have a bit of that speed in me. But these days, I’m just as interested in where my next snack is coming from as I am in running circles!
Out here on the ranch, I’m known for being curious, playful, and, well... a bit of a slow poke. I like to take my time, sniffing around, exploring every corner, and finding every little patch of grass. I’m always up for an adventure, and whenever I’m out on the trail, I make sure to keep my eyes—and nose—open for anything tasty along the way.
Now, here’s a little secret about me and my friends—we absolutely love watermelons. I mean, who wouldn’t? On a hot day, there’s nothing better than sinking your teeth into a juicy watermelon. The cool, sweet taste, the crunch—it’s enough to make me pick up my pace a bit! Every time I see someone walking over with a slice, my ears perk right up.
When we head out on trail rides, you might think we’re starving from the way we eat. But honestly, we’re just taking advantage of every nibble along the way! From the ranch to the border fence, there’s always something tasty to munch on. I like to grab a bite here and there, savoring every mouthful. Sometimes, the humans laugh and say, “Poke, you eat like you haven’t seen food in days!” But hey, when you’ve got good grass all around, why wouldn’t you enjoy it?
One of my favorite spots is down by the border fence. There’s something about that place—maybe it’s the fresh air or the endless view. I love trotting over there with my friends, taking my time, and grabbing a few snacks along the way. The humans say I move a bit slower than I used to, but I just like to take in the scenery, enjoy my meal, and have a good time. After all, what’s the rush?
So if you ever come to visit, bring a slice of watermelon for old Poke! I’ll be the one trotting along at my own pace, keeping an eye out for the next treat and enjoying every step of the journey. Life’s too good to pass up a snack, and as far as I’m concerned, every trail is an all-you-can-eat buffet!
