A Horse Named Don

A Story about a Horse Named Don

My name is Don, and I’m the oldest horse on the ranch. I like to take things nice and slow, just the way I like my day to go. Some folks call me “laid-back” or even “easy-going,” and I guess they’re right. I don’t see much point in rushing around. Life’s too short to hurry, if you ask me.

I live here on the ranch with a few other horses, but they’re all a bit younger and more spry than I am. They like to run and play, while I’d rather spend my time chewing on some hay, enjoying the sunshine, and maybe watching the clouds float by. Sometimes, the younger ones try to get me to join in their races, but I just smile, shake my mane, and let them zoom past. Let them wear themselves out, I say!

My favorite time of day has to be the early morning, when everything’s quiet and the world is just waking up. The sun rises over the fields, casting a soft light across the pasture, and I like to stand there and soak it all in. The birds chirp, the dew sparkles, and I feel a calm that only an old horse like me can truly appreciate. It’s a peaceful time, just me and the gentle sounds of the ranch.

When visitors come to the ranch, they always seem to find their way over to me sooner or later. I think they can tell I’ve got some wisdom in these old eyes. I’ll walk up to them real slow, give them a little nuzzle, and let them pat my nose. They always say, “There’s just something about Don.” I guess I’ve got a way of making folks feel calm and welcome.

Food, of course, is another one of life’s pleasures. I’m a big fan of apples and carrots, and every now and then, if I’m lucky, someone brings me a peppermint. Now, that’s a treat! I savor every bite, enjoying it nice and slow. I might be the only horse on the ranch who knows how to make a carrot last longer than a few seconds.

As the day winds down, I watch the sun set behind the trees, casting long shadows across the pasture. It’s a moment I treasure, a reminder of all the good days I’ve had here. I may not be as fast or as playful as I once was, but I’ve got my spot here on the ranch, and that’s all I need. Life’s good, simple, and steady—just the way I like it.

So if you’re ever around, come say hi to old Don. I’ll be the one standing under the tree, taking my time and enjoying every little thing this place has to offer. And remember, there’s no need to hurry—take it from me, slow and steady wins the race.
